“Shahrukh Khan is an institution of acting,” according to Varun Dhawan

Before making his acting debut in Karan Johar’s upcoming film Student of the Year, newcomer Varun Dhawan was an assistant to Johar during the making of My Name is Khan (2010). Varun recently expressed to the Indian media during a promotional event that it was during this period that he learned a lot from the film’s leading star Shahrukh Khan. “During that film, his script used to be scribbled with notes. I used to take the scripts to him and asked him what it is? It was all his references, his homework. So we could just learn by looking at him,” according to Varun. He further praised Shahrukh by stating the following: “He is an institution of acting, the way he functions, the way he goes about his work, you could just learn by looking at him.” I am sure those who are passionate fans of Shahrukh will find it difficult to disagree with Varun and this particular complement he has made towards him.

In addition Siddharth Malhotra, another newcomer and Varun’s co-star in Student of the Year was also an assistant during the filming of My Name is Khan. Siddharth mentioned the following to the media about Shahrukh: “During the shooting of My Name is Khan, Shahrukh came to know that we both wanted to act. He used to prepare his lines and then suddenly he used to start talking ‘You should come early, see the props, touch things and feel them, look at your surroundings’.” Clearly, Shahrukh was not just immersed with himself or his work during the filming of My Name is Khan. He graciously took the time to dish out handy advice to these two acting enthusiasts!

Student of the Year stars Varun, Siddharth as well as Alia Bhatt in their debut roles and will release in cinemas on 19 October 2012.

Katrina Kaif and Hrithik Roshan in Siddharth Anand's next

Last week we reported that Hrithik Roshan had been signed on to play the lead in Siddharth Anand's next, which is said to be the remake of the Hollywood blockbuster Knight And Day. Now, the news is that Katrina Kaif has been roped in as the lead actress for the film.

Talking about the hot pair of Hrithik and Katrina in his film, Siddharth says, "Having Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif on board, the film is a treat not just for the audiences but also for me, as I will be directing them in the film."

Siddharth however clarifies that the film will not be an exact replica of the Hollywood blockbuster. Says Anand, "When we started the film it was supposed to be a remake of Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz's film Knight And Day, but I wasn't too happy to do a remake of the film completely. The reason being that there were certain points that according to me didn't work, that was when I decided to plug in what I felt could be solutions to the issues. Besides this there is also the issue that, Knight And Day when it released became a very popular film, but when my film releases, I don't want the audiences to just watch a remake. I want them to see it in a different light as it will be different. The audiences have to get something new."

Anand also informs that he got Sujoy Ghosh onboard to rewrite the script. "When I decided to rework on the script, we got in Sujoy Ghosh and Suresh Nair to develop the script and story line which since then has changed totally. In fact I can say confidently that though the idea of the film is still Knight And Day the audience will be in for a treat as there will be new twists and a whole different story line."

The film goes on floor in February 2013.

Saif and Kareena to get engaged on the 16th of october?

Finally the date has been announced. All the hype and guessing surrounding Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor’s wedding ceremonies may soon come to an end.

If reports are to can be trusted , Saif’s mother and actress Sharmila Tagore has started with preparations for the wedding and apparently, a lot of invites have already been sent to people for the wedding which according to reports will take place on the 16th of october, as planned.

Last month, as we reported that the wedding would take place in two stages, with an actual ceremony in Delhi followed by a lavish celebrity affair in Mumbai.

Sharmila Tagore had said that the big fat royal wedding would be attended by close family members.

And reports also suggest that Saif’s younger sister Saba Ali Khan, who is a jewellery designer, is in-charge of the wedding preparations along with Sharmila.

Katrina to do acro-dancing in Dhoom 3

Katrina Kaif would be training for a new form of dancing known as acro-dancing for Dhoom 3. It has now been decided that Aamir too would be joining Katrina in this rare and intricate form of dancing.

While Katrina would be trained in Mumbai by acro-experts, Aamir would be taking lessons for the same in Chicago.

After rigorously learning belly dancing for the song 'Sheila Ki Jawaani' in Farah Khan's Tees Maar Khan and another intricate form of belly dancing for the 'Mashallah' number in Ek Tha Tiger, Katrina has moved to another far more complex form of dancing in Dhoom 3.

Acro-dancing is a very complex combination of classical dancing and the elastic-bodied skills of acrobatics, acro-dancing is considered to be one of the most complex forms of modern dancing.

"Yeh sabki bas ki baat nahin," said a choreographer who heard about Katrina's new and most daunting career challenge. "Not every heroine's cup of tea at all. I once wanted one of our top heroines who is also a fab dancer to attempt acro-dancing. We practiced for a fortnight and then gave up. Iss ladki ko mera salaam."

The choreographer's salutation to Katrina is not unfounded. She will be spending a good two months practicing her acrobatics for the dance. Aamir will train for lesser time since he will join Katrina only briefly for acro-dancing.

Says a source, "Katrina will start with learning acrobatics and gymnastics suspended from a harness. This form of training for acro-dancing is really hard because it hones in on a dancer's ability to maintain grace suspended in air. After this, Katrina will go on to training for classical dancing, and then do a combination of the two styles. It's a huge challenge. But as far as her dancing is concerned, Katrina wants to keep moving to a new level with every film."

A world-renowned acrobat would be flown down to Chicago where Dhoom 3 would be shot, and then to Mumbai. Katrina and Aamir are expected to continue their acro-dancing training even while attending to her other commitments in-between the Dhoom 3 schedules.

"Katrina wants the dance numbers in Dhoom 3 to take her beyond 'Chikni Chameli'", says a source.

Barfi!

Released On: 14 Sep 2012
Directed By: Anurag Basu
Starring: Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Ileana DCruz, Akash Khurana, Sumona Chakravarti

The late Rajesh Khanna put it across marvelously in the memorable ANAND, 'Zindagi badi honi chahiye, lambi nahi.' Notwithstanding the roadblocks in our lives, one should celebrate life every single moment, every single day. That, in a nutshell, is the essence of Anurag Basu's BARFI!.

When we meet/see differently-abled people or special people, we may have a notion that they live a gloomy, grief-stricken life. BARFI! shatters the myth.

BARFI! cannot be slotted in any particular genre. But it has the disposition of the much-acclaimed LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL, a delightful film that tugged at your heart strings. That film advocated the fact that one should savor every moment. Similarly, BARFI! notifies you to relish life and live it king-size. Yet, like most Hindi movies, this one is essentially a love story that throws the spotlight on the happy-go-lucky Barfi and his romances, first with the classy Shruti and later, with an autistic girl, Jhilmil.

The beauty of the film lies in the fact that it instantly absorbs you into Barfi's world. I wish to specify that one should not correlate BARFI! with disability. It's more about characters who face the challenges that life has to offer, yet live a more gratifying life than anyone else. It's about living each day of your life to the fullest, giving happiness, feeling love. It's a unique love story between three exceptional characters, something we haven't witnessed on the Hindi screen earlier.

His parents named him Murphy, but everyone calls him Barfi. Always ready with a prank up his sleeve, he's quite the charmer, especially with the ladies. In Darjeeling, Barfi [Ranbir Kapoor] is the talk of the town. Even though he can neither speak nor listen.

His bitter-sweet relationship with two beautiful ladies, Shruti [Ileana D'Cruz] and Jhilmil [Priyanka Chopra], sets in motion a chain of events that turns his life upside down. A heart-warming tale of selfless love and about finding contentment in the smallest of things in life.

Director Anurag Basu, a proficient storyteller, approaches Barfi's character with acute sensitivity and perceptiveness. Also, a film like BARFI! is simplistic and unfussy to the core. There is nothing valiant or heroic about Ranbir's character, yet he is confident and courageous in spirit. Like I pointed out at the outset, the story educates you about life and how to appreciate it. We complain and crib about trivial issues, but Barfi and Jhilmil are two people who unearth contentment in everything they do, despite the challenges they encounter.

The handling of the written material by Anurag Basu is something to marvel at. It's put together with tender compassion and the powerful conclusion is hugely impacting. The finest thing about the film is its power to move and transform you on several occasions. It's the depiction of love and sacrifice that makes BARFI! worthwhile.

Pritam outdoes himself yet again with a winning soundtrack. The soundtrack is as sweet and appealing as the title of this film and in tandem with beautiful poetry, helps create a picturesque world that's in sync with the premise of the film. Since two of the three protagonists don't have lines to deliver, the effective background score holds immense significance here. I'd like to make a special mention of the cinematography as well. It's simply magnificent [Ravi Varman]. The stunning locales only enhance the impact.

Blemishes? It's unusual for a Hind film hero to have no dialogue or lip-sync songs in the film. Also, the film is hugely experimental from the commercial point of view. The typical masala movie-loving audience may/may not embrace the film enthusiastically. Yet, I'd like to adjoin, Ranbir's character has relatability and one can only hope and also recommend that in these fast-changing times, an untouched theme like BARFI! is embraced with affection and warmth!

Besides, the film could've done with some trimming in the first hour. The pace slackens at times, although the chain of events in the second hour camouflages this minor aberration.

To depict an intricate and complex character like Barfi is not everyone's cup of tea and I doubt if any actor could've portrayed the part as brilliantly as Ranbir. Here's an actor who's truly versatile, courageous and flexible and his choice of films proves it. He has dared to illustrate a character which many mainstream actors may not choose to implement. Ranbir's facial expressions and body language is the hallmark of the enterprise. The critical complement I can award to Ranbir's act is that it is truly convincing, heartrending and intelligent, all rolled into one dazzling result.

From a model in FASHION to a femme fatale in 7 KHOON MAAF, Priyanka is known for treading the untrodden path in her career. Priyanka delivers yet another knockout performance in BARFI!. Jhilmil, her character, is someone you would fall in love with. Very infrequently does one see an actor get so deeply absorbed in a character the way Priyanka does in this movie. She is matchless here and truly deserves all the accolades that will come her way eventually. Also, her pairing with Ranbir is ideal, they look wonderful together.

Making her debut in Hindi films, Ileana, a prominent actress in South, is super efficient. She does everything with effortlessness, self-assurance, splendor and decorum and that's not an easy thing to do by any standard.

Saurabh Shukla is in terrific form. Akash Khurana is wonderful. Ashish Vidyarthi is effective. Ditto for Rupa Ganguly and Jishu Sengupta, who leave a mark in brief roles. Sumona Chakravarti is adequate. Haradhan Bandopadhyay, enacting the role of Dadu, is remarkable.

On the whole, BARFI! is unusual for Bollywood. You don't formulate movies like BARFI! targeting its box-office potential or its commercial prospects. You create such films for the passion of cinema. BARFI! is akin to a whiff of fresh air. Its foremost triumph is that it leaves you with a powerful emotion: Happiness! I sincerely believe, no Hindi movie buff should deprive himself/herself of watching this brilliant motion picture. Also, the viewer needs to savor Ranbir, Priyanka and Ileana's paramount performances, one of the strengths of this movie. Strongly recommended!

When Ileana D’Cruz refused to work with Sallu!

Barfi actress ileana D’Cruz refused to work in Wanted, the Hindi version of Telugu hit Pokiri and thus lost the chance to work with bollywod’s bhai, Salman Khan. But now the gorgeous actress is hoping to work with him.

She said, “Yes, I was approached for the remake of Pokiri in Tamil and Hindi. I did Pokiri in Telugu, which did a huge business. I didn’t take the offer of Pokiri in Hindi, which was titled Wanted, as I felt I was not prepared enough to enter Bollywood.”

“It was not that I didn’t want to do the film, it’s just that I didn’t want to do it half-heartedly. I missed an opportunity to work with Salman Khan in Wanted. But no regret as I feel Barfi! is the perfect launch for me. But I am really happy that ‘Wanted’ did well. I would love to work with Salman Khan in the near future,” added Ileana.

Salman Khan is my closest friend, says Preity Zinta…

Preity Zinta loves Salman Khan as a friend, calling him her closest buddy. Even if the world turns upside down, she is sure Salman will never leave her side. He has always stood by her through thick and thin. She calls Salman a straightforward guy with a very big heart.

Preity’s latest film, Ishkq In Paris will see Salman Khan shake a leg with the actress. Salman’s ‘Main Aur Mrs Khanna’ saw Priety make a guest appearance in a song. However, she says, just because she did it, Salman did not agree to be a part of her directorial debut. IN no way did he return a favor.

“There is no hard and fast rule that just because I did a song in his film he does for me. Out of all the actors, he has been closet and most supportive friend in whatever I have done. Not just for this song but for music as well,” said Preity.

“For me, my first film as a producer has been an uphill task because you have to work hard in whatever you do. But he being there has made a huge difference to me,” she added.

The song which will see Sallu gyrate to is titled “Kudiye Di Kurti”, composed by duo Sajid-Wajid. It is a part of a wedding sequence.

Salman and Preity’s friendship is very old and hey share a super strong bond.

Talking about their friendship, Preity said: “Our relation goes back ten years and he has always been supportive. He is, has been, a friend, who has always been there irrespective of what the media or people say, he has a big heart. He is honest straight forward guy. For me he is so awesome.”

“Ishkq In Paris” is directed by Prem Raj, also features Arjun Rampal, French actress Isabelle Adjani and Gaurav Chanana.
